HP Firebird with VoodooDNA 803

HP's purchase of Voodoo has resulted in the past in an Editors' Choice–winning gaming rig, the Blackbird 002, and the Voodoo Envy 133 subnotebook. The latest system to come out of this union is the HP Firebird with VoodooDNA 803 ($2,099 list). A high-powered gaming desktop, it has some unique attributes. For one, the rig's insides have several notebook-like characteristics, including switchable graphics—the first we've seen on a desktop. For another, its styling is distinctive, yet it has an HP/Voodoo family resemblance. Unfortunately, there are a few issues that could keep it from winning over the hard-core gamer, such as some disappointments with performance and limited upgradability. Still, this is not your father's gaming desktop. And for the more casual part of the gaming market, that's a good thing.

Apple iMac (Nvidia GeForce 9400M)

The all-in-one space pioneered by Apple has been dominated by the iMac. While there were single form factor PCs long before the iMac (the Commodore PET, Osborne 1, and TRS-80, to name a few), none survived as long. Looking at the latest Apple iMac (Nvidia GeForce 8400M) ($1,499 list), that history of dominance is not likely to be surpassed any time soon. Last year, the same $1,499 price tag could buy you a 20-inch iMac, which was nice, but now that same amount of money gets you the 24-inch model that you were really lusting for all along.

Sony VAIO VGC-JS130J/P

The all-in-one PC desktop space seems to be evolving as rapidly as the netbook category is doing in notebooks. The Sony VAIO VGC-JS130J/P ($1,099.99 list) is a prime example of that progression. I think it's better equipped for the real world than the bare-bones iMac, and it costs $99 less. It will work as a primary PC for your home, or as the second or third in a multi-PC household.

HP refreshes HP-UX 11i platform

HP has announced updates to its HP-UX 11i high-end Unix environment designed to extend server uptime, along with enhancements to its Serviceguard technology to improve availability in clustered environments.HP-UX 11i v3 Update 4 now enables customers to substantially reduce planned downtime for operating system upgrades by applying changes to a new root partition while the system remains online. Once fully tested and verified, the system can be rebooted with the new environment, the firm said.

After Dell finally launched its netbook, the Mini 9, there was still one major manufacturer’s netbook that some people were waiting to get their hands on: the one promised from Lenovo.Well, the wait is over, as it’s finally made its appearance in the form of the IdeaPad S10e, a well designed netbook with a decent feature set and a competitive price tag, the only downside being the battery life from the 3-cell battery.You can tell straight away which family of notebooks it’s related to, as the squared-off design, measuring 25 x 18.3 x 2.8cm, makes it look and feel like a ThinkPad that’s been shrunk in the wash, which to many people makes it a winner from the start. But being a netbook it’s not only available in the familiar black, it comes in red and white as well.
